Green Roof for the USPS by Turner Construction Company


Turner Construction Company, the nation’s largest green building, has substantially completed the New York City’s largest green roof for the United States Postal Service (USPS) on a 2.2 million square feet of Morgan Mail Processing Facility on West 28th Street between 9th and 10th Avenue.

The scope of work includes the installation of plants and grasses and fourteen wooden benches made from sustainable timber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. The roof will reduce storm water runoff and will save the USPS $ 30,000 per year on heating and cooling costs.

2.5 acre green roof is part of the USPS facilities greener and strategies that will help agencies achieve the goal of reducing energy use by 30 percent in 2015. To further support the Post Office facilities greener strategy, Turner was replaced more than 2,000 windows and installed more than 50 air handler units. Turner also managed interior fit-outs in the seventh and eighth floors in the facility, to improve the energy efficiency of Morgan Mail Processing Facility.
